President Irfaan Ali says Guyana is exploring opportunities to be part of Formula 1 powerboat World championships. This is an international motorboat racing competition.

“We are going to work with some international players also to have formula 1 racing,” the Head of State highlighted.

Additionally, Guyana also hopes to include electric boat racing.

“You know how the world is going in terms of electric boats and next year the world is going to have maybe the first world championship and we are working to see how we can be part of that, if we can be part of that,” he said.

According to President Ali his administration is looking to use sports as an avenue to market Guyana’s tourism product.

“What we want to do is build our sports tourism portfolio on many plans not only cricket. So we have cricket, we have horse racing that is taking on life by itself, we have the regatta, football, squash, we’re looking to have all our sporting event become major part of our tourism product itself.”

He was speaking at the Linden Regatta held on Sunday. This is one of the many activities being hosted to mark Cricket Carnival. The event was packed with scores of patrons and Dr. Ali said he was pleased with the turnout.
