Happy World Turtle Day
World Turtle Day has been observed since the year 2000. The day was created as a yearly observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.
This special day was founded by Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson, who are also the founders of American Tortoise Rescue. American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle.(Credit: worldturtleday.org)
In Guyana specifically in the Rupununi, SRCS and Caiman House, Yupukari Village are collaborating with local communities to protect the local turtle population. In the last 2 years, we collectively rescued more than 2500 turtles from flooding! In the future, both organisations will continue to work with communities to try to reverse the population decline for turtles in the Rupununi.
