“How do I start over?” - Colours of India owner after boutique and house gutted by fire

Ravi Latchman, who runs the popular family business ‘Colours of India,’ which was ravaged by fire on Friday, has expressed profound despair and heartbreak.

The blaze, believed to have been caused by an electrical fault, started at about 15:00h, and quickly spread, destroying the boutique, situated at Lot D 16 Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, along with the family house and a mechanic shop next door.

In several Facebook posts, Latchman noted that the flames engulfed his livelihood and the sanctuary he had built for his loved ones over the years.

“How do I start over? How can I provide for my family again? Tell me this is a dream,” Latchman said, adding, “Our home is gone. This is too much for me to handle. I started from scratch; every drop of sweat & tears were poured into my Colours of India, so much sacrifices I made.”

He noted that the business would have celebrated its 10-anniversary in the next few weeks.

“I had so [many] plans. So [many] outfits I had already brought in for our 10th year Anniversary Sale. All gone up in FLAMES.”

While Latchman is not in the country, he said he is “thankful” that his family is safe and no harm was done to them. He also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community, which has been a source of comfort during this difficult time.

“I left my beautiful home, and this is what I am going to return home seeing. My heart breaks. How will I face that building when I return home?” he questioned.

The Guyana Fire Service has launched an investigation to ascertain the cause.
