Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton has stated that he does not have any intention of engaging President Irfaan Ali until he can meet his definition of meaningful consultation.
Norton said “Unless there is an attempt to ensure there is meaningful consultation, I will not engage. I am not prepared to let the President invite me, he sits there and give me some names with CV’s and then go out and say he would have consulted.”
According to Norton, the appointment of the Police and Integrity Service Commissions will be challenged in court before this week ends as he believes the consultations held on these constitutional bodies were not meaningful.
He noted that he will then make a decision on future consultations.
Norton and President Irfaan Ali were set to meet late last month, but that meeting never happened as a result of President Ali’s busy schedule. The Head of State then invited the Opposition Leader to another meeting where he was a no show. Norton failed to indicate his absence from the meeting beforehand.
His reason for his absence was that he had a ‘pressing schedule’. The Head of State has since labelled Norton’s behaviour as unwilling and immature.
