Jamaican-born artiste gunned down in Sophia over money
A 29-year-old Jamaican national and singer was gunned down on Thursday during an argument over money at Lot 125 Section ‘A’ South Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
The dead man has been identified as Navar George Barton, a Jamaican national and singer.
Police said that Barton was reportedly murdered by a 37-year-old taxi driver from Sophia, identified as his friend, and another man. The investigation has revealed that Barton was living with his 19-year-old girlfriend in Sophia.
According to Barton’s girlfriend, on the day in question, she and Barton were in their bedroom when they heard a knock on the door.
Barton asked, “Is who?” but received no answer, and the knocking persisted. Looking out through a glass window, they saw the taxi driver and another man standing in front of the door.
Barton decided to check and see what the men wanted. His girlfriend recounted that she then heard the door open, and an argument ensued between Barton and the suspects over money.
This was followed by two loud explosions, which she suspected were gunshots. When she exited the room to check, she found Barton lying motionless on his back with what appeared to be blood running from his head.
She saw the taxi driver and the other man fleeing the scene. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned, and Barton was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
He had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Crime scene investigators processed the scene and recovered two 9mm spent shells and two metal fragments. Barton’s body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Several individuals have been questioned in connection with the case. The police have since arrested the taxi driver, who remains in custody and is assisting with the investigation.
