‘Jango’ handed life sentence over “senseless” 2014 Boxing Day stabbing
Almost a decade after a brutal Boxing Day attack, Ganesh Dhanraj, also known as ‘Jango,’ was handed a life sentence for the 2014 felonious wounding committed on Clinton Babooram.
His sentence, which Justice Navindra Singh imposed in the Demerara High Court, comes weeks after Dhanraj of Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was found guilty of felonious wounding.
In delivering his ruling, Justice Singh started with a baseline sentence of 30 years and imposed an additional four years because Dhanraj attempted to present a false defence.
Furthermore, the Judge added an additional five years, characterising the convict's actions as “senseless, unprovoked, and cruel.” Dhanraj will be eligible for parole after serving 39 years.
In addition to the life sentence, Dhanraj is set to receive four strokes of the whip.
Babooram was stabbed while standing outside a rum shop near his home on December 26, 2014, in Montrose.
Without warning, Dhanraj approached him with a knife and stabbed him in the groin before fleeing the scene. Babooram collapsed, bleeding heavily and losing consciousness.
Emergency responders transported him to St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital, but due to a critical shortage of blood for transfusion, he was transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital.
There, he underwent life-saving emergency surgery and spent three weeks recovering from his severe injuries.
Initially charged with attempted murder, Dhanraj was prosecuted by attorneys Muntaz Ali and Christopher Belfield. After deliberations, the jury returned a guilty verdict on the lesser charge of felonious wounding.
