Labourer who assaulted cop with brick gets $400,000 bail

A labourer who assaulted a cop with a brick was on Wednesday granted $400,000 bail after being slapped with a felonious wounding charge.

22-year-old Daniel Singh, also known as “Anand,” appeared before Magistrate Zamina Ali-Seepersaud in the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on July 16 at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara (WCD), Singh unlawfully and maliciously wounded 33-year-old Lance Corporal Rickland Edmundson in an attempt to maim, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm.

The defendant was granted $400,000 bail, and the matter was adjourned to August 17 for report and fixture.

Lance Corporal Edmundson was performing traffic patrol in the vicinity of Anna Catherina when he observed the driver of motor canter GDD 5340 acting suspiciously, the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) had stated.

The canter was stopped, and the driver, who the CCU said was Singh, was asked to produce his licence and other relevant documents.

According to the CCU, the driver drove away, and the Lance Corporal caught up with him at his Anna Catherina home.

Singh’s father and sister allegedly held onto Edmondson as he picked up a brick and threw it towards the cop, hitting him to his right eye.

It was stated that the trio went into their house and locked up while the cop was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital by the ranks of the Police Anti-Crime Patrol.

He was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital and later went to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was admitted as a patient in the male surgical ward.

The suspect was later arrested, and his vehicle was taken to Leonora Police Station and lodged.
