Light traffic to start flowing on the Harbour Bridge from 9 pm – Minister Edghill
Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill moments ago confirmed that the Demerara Harbour Bridge would be reopened to light vehicular traffic from 21:00h.
This is expected to bring relief to thousands of persons who were expected to traverse the floating structure to get to work and school tomorrow.
Following the closure of the bridge on Saturday morning, contractors have been working assiduously to get it up and running.
At about 02:00h Saturday morning, fuel tanker MV Tradewind Passion, which is assigned to GuyOil, collided with the Demerara Harbour Bridge, rendering it inoperable.
The bridge was open to ocean-going vessels at the time, and maintenance works were ongoing. As a result of the collision, a worker – Andy Duke - was injured and suffered a broken leg.
As a result, a Board of Inquiry was commissioned to investigate the circumstances which led to the accident.
