Lusignan inmates benefit from dental outreach

In a move towards advancing healthcare within the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), a 12-member dental team from the Cheddi Jagan Dental School and President’s College Dental Clinic hosted an outreach at the Lusignan Prison on Sunday.

The services offered to 56 inmates include extractions, fillings, cleanings, and examinations.

The officer-in-charge of the location, Senior Superintendent of Prisons Deoraj Gyandat, noted that the initiative is an ongoing effort by the GPS to address prisoners’ oral health issues.

“We are very grateful to the dental team for the visit. It helps our dental assessment for inmates.  So, this outreach here today is very much appreciated,” Gyandat noted.

Meanwhile, acting Deputy Director of Prisons Kevin Pilgrim noted that the outreach not only assists the GPS in filling the gaps in dental services offered to inmates but is also a testament to the ongoing commitment to enhancing healthcare standards for the inmates.

Pilgrim further underscored the crucial role of dental hygiene, which aligns with the servicer’s strategic healthcare pillar for incarcerated persons.

“This outreach also marks a significant milestone in the institution’s commitment to elevating healthcare standards offered to inmates,” he said.

The 12-member team comprises senior dentist Dr. Uon Sanford and Dentex, dental assistants, and dental surgery students.
