Lusignan prison escapee spotted at Parika

Escaped Lusignan prisoner Jose Awad was spotted on Thursday morning in the vicinity of Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

In a statement, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) said that a search party appears to be narrowing in on the fugitive as the search continues.

The Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, confirmed that a reward is being offered for any information that leads to Awad’s recapture.

The Prison Head advised that persons with any information can contact the nearest Police Station or the office of the Director of Prisons on telephone number 613-6616 or Officer-in-Charge of the Lusignan Prison on telephone number 220-4289.

“It should be noted that aiding and abetting a prison escapee can result in three or more years imprisonment when or if convicted,” the Prison Service said. On Wednesday, Awad’s wife and mother-in-law were arrested after he reportedly contacted them following his escape.

Awad escaped from the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara (ECD), on Tuesday while labouring at the snackette in the compound of the Cecil Kilkenny Training School. He was serving a two-year jail sentence for break-and-enter and simple larceny.

Prison authorities had said that the prisoner was left unsupervised for a short period of time when he made good his escape.
