Mahaicony man, 27, dies in accident after overtaking several vehicles
A 27-year-old driver, who overtook several vehicles along the Columbia Public Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD), on Thursday, is now dead after he collided with a motor lorry.
Dead is Jonathan Gomes of Airy Hall, Mahaicony, ECD. The accident, which occurred at about 20:15h, included motor car with registration number PVV 3618, driven by Gomes, and motor lorry GSS 6980, operated by Odit Ramdeen.
Initial investigations revealed that the motor lorry was traveling east along the northern side of the road while Gomes was heading west on the southern side.
It is reported that Gomes was overtaking several vehicles at high speed around a right bend, which caused him to veer onto the northern side of the road directly into the path of the lorry.
In an attempt to avoid a collision, Ramdeen, the driver of the lorry, swerved further north onto the northern parapet. Despite his efforts, the motor car collided with the front portion of the lorry.
Following the collision, the lorry crashed into a utility pole. Public-spirited citizens removed Gomes from the vehicle in an unconscious state and transported him, along with Ramdeen, to the Mahaicony Public Hospital.
Upon arrival, Gomes was pronounced dead by the attending doctor, while Ramdeen received medical treatment and was subsequently discharged.
A breathalyser test conducted on Ramdeen showed no trace of alcohol. He is currently in police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
