Mammologist found dead at Oku Backdam, assistant in custody
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is investigating the death of 30-year-old mammologist Meshach Pierre, who was found dead on Thursday at the G2 Minerals Guyana Inc. compound in Oku Backdam, Cuyuni-Mazaruni.
Pierre has been conducting a mammal survey at the G2 Minerals site since September 14, 2024. He and 11 others, including his assistant, 27-year-old Philbert Denhart, were staying at the compound.
According to reports, prior to the discovery, Pierre had instructed Denhart not to return to their shared room as he had a meeting.
Shortly after, around 14:55h, Denhart, who was sitting with colleagues, checked the time and rushed to the room to prepare for work.
Upon entering, he found Pierre crouched on the floor, unresponsive. Denhart immediately called for the on-site medic, who arrived and confirmed that Pierre had passed away.
The police were subsequently summoned to the scene, and Pierre's body was transported to Bartica Regional Hospital. Denhart has been taken into police custody to assist with ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding Pierre’s death.
