Man, 28, seen robbing women at gunpoint slapped with illegal gun, ammo charges

Charged: Dexter Samsair

A 28-year-old man, whom the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said was seen along with another man attempting to rob two females, was on Tuesday slapped with illegal firearm and ammunition charges.

Dexter Samsair, a vendor of ‘B’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was arraigned before Magistrate Rondell Weever in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The charge against Samsair states that on July 16, he had a firearm and ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence. He was remanded to prison, and the matter was adjourned to August 9.

The GPF's Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) previously stated that on the day in question, ranks were on patrol at Blygezight Gardens, Georgetown, when they observed two identifiable males, one armed with an object, scuffling with two females whom they appeared to be robbing.

According to the CCU, one of the ranks discharged a round with intent to stop the males, during which one of the men dropped an object onto the ground while his accomplice and the two females ran away.

It was noted that the ranks approached the man, and the object was observed to be a firearm. He was arrested and taken to the Kitty Police Station, where the suspected firearm and one round of ammunition were lodged.
