Man accused of murdering reputed wife remanded a day after her burial
Neldon Neblett, who is accused of murdering his reputed wife after she cautioned him about his alcohol consumption, was on Wednesday remanded to prison.
Neblett, 27, called ‘Jojo’ of Lot 1 Best Village, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was hauled before Magistrate Rhondel Weever in the Wales Magistrate Court.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on June 22, 2024, at Best Village, he murdered Anuradha Khatoon, called ‘Mama,’ a 30-year-old vendor.
The case was adjourned to August 08 for reports and transferred to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate Court. The Police said that the duo had been in a common-law relationship for five years, living together in a one-storey concrete structure at Best Village.
On the day in question, Police said that Neblett returned home intoxicated and Khatoon reportedly told him to “ease on the alcohol drinking,” which triggered him.
As a result, an argument ensued, and the defendant allegedly armed himself with a knife and stabbed the 34-year-old fruit vendor in the throat. She collapsed in the living room, and the suspect fled the scene. The woman’s 12-year-old son raised an alarm after he discovered her lying on the floor in blood.
Family members rushed Khatoon to the nearby West Demerara Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Neblett had fled the scene but was apprehended hours later. Khatoon was laid to rest on Tuesday.
