Man chopped to death at Annai
A man of Amerindian descent was on Friday chopped to death at Annai Access Road, North Rupununi, Region Nine.
Dead is Aires Matthew, and according to the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the incident occurred between 23:00h and 00:00h.
According to Radesh Phulya, a 48-year-old driver, on the day in question, he, along with Matthew and three other work colleagues, were in a white canter parked on the Annai Access Road, consuming “Itapava beers.”
Phulya said he was pulled off the vehicle by two men, one of whom was armed with a cutlass. The man started to chop him about the body, and Matthew intervened, and the suspects attacked him instead.
The suspects dealt him a chop to his right forearm and chest while Phulya escaped during the attack.
After the attack, the two suspects made good their escape in a car, and the duo was rushed to the Annai Health Center, where Phulya was treated, and his condition was listed as stable.
On the other hand, Matthew was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. The matter was later reported to the Annai Police Station.
“Information received by the police is that the attack was as a result of Radesh speaking to a female teacher earlier in the night at Tractor Bar, which concern the suspects,” the CCU said, noting that efforts are being made to arrest the two suspects.
Also, arrangements are being made to take Matthew’s body to the Lethem Regional Hospital's Mortuary. The investigation is in progress.
