Man faces retrial over 2018 Kitty murder
Damien Bissoon, also known as ‘Brother,’ who was on trial for the 2018 murder of Taj Anthony Jarvis, is set to face a retrial after a judge declared a mistrial on Wednesday.
Bissoon, of Shell Road, Kitty, Georgetown, was charged with Jarvis’s murder in 2022, after four years on the run. Jarvis was fatally stabbed on March 30, 2018, in the vicinity of Barr and Alexander Streets, Kitty, Georgetown.
After hours of deliberations on Wednesday, a 12-member jury could not reach a unanimous decision. As a result, Demerara High Court Judge Justice Peter Hugh ordered the retrial.
Reports indicate that Jarvis and a friend were walking in the vicinity of Barr and Alexander Streets, Kitty, Georgetown when they were confronted by a knife-wielding man, believed to be Bissoon, who demanded money from them.
However, Jarvis reportedly responded, “I don’t have any money.” This led to an argument, during which the assailant stabbed Jarvis in the chest.
When Jarvis collapsed to the ground, Bissoon allegedly kicked him several times before fleeing the scene.
The injured man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
