Education Minister Priya Manickchand says the education cash grant can possibly surpass the initial target, which is to increase it to $50,000.
Manickchand who was speaking on Globespan 24x7 on Tuesday evening, posited that “before the end of our term at least $50,000 and I’m saying here with a very big hint, it could very well be more.”
She noted “this money is a good investment. It will be used sensibly, because majority of parents that I know spend everything they can on their children.”
The cash grant is aimed at providing parents with a form of support for their school aged children.
In 2020, the PPP/C Government reintroduced this initiative and gave a $15,000 cash grant, while in 2021, it was increased by $10,000. Now for 2022, the grant will be increased to $30,000.
This $30,000 will be allocated as follows: a $25,000 ‘Because We Care’ cash grant and a school uniform voucher valued at $5,000.
Furthermore, this initiative will be complemented with breakfast for every grade six child. She promised that these meals would be “very efficient and reliable.”
