A 44-year-old manager of the Markanata Ranch was arrested in the early hours of Sunday after he was found to have an unlicensed firearm and a live round of ammunition at a bar in St. Ignatius Village, Central Rupununi.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), officers acted on a tip-off and arrived at the Mountain Stream Lounge around 12:30h.

Upon their arrival, they located Sam Melville, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and dressed in brown shorts. A black object resembling a firearm was observed tucked into his waistband.

The police officers approached Melville, identified themselves, and questioned him about the firearm. When asked whether he was a licensed firearm holder, Melville admitted he did not possess a license.

The officers then confiscated the firearm and, after clearing it, found one live 9mm round in the magazine.

Melville, when cautioned about the allegations of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, claimed that he had received the gun from his boss, Chris Moses, in order to protect the ranch.

When questioned about the whereabouts of Moses, Melville stated that he believed his boss was in Georgetown.

The manager was immediately arrested and transported to Lethem Police Station, where he remains in custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.
