Massara Village enjoying first-time access to potable water
Several households at Massara (Section Three), Region Nine, now have first-time access to potable water supply with a $21.6 million system through the Ministry of Housing and Water-Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI).
The residents attended the commissioning with Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal, Permanent Secretary Bishram Kuppen, GWI’s Hinterland Services Director Ramchand Jailal, and Regional Vice-Chairman Bertie Xavier.
Minister Croal emphasised the government’s commitment to equitable development, particularly in hinterland communities. He stated that access to potable water is not just about convenience but also about ensuring that people live healthier lives and creating opportunities for growth.
He also said that tremendous progress is being made in Region Nine in education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and other sectors.
Permanent Secretary Kuppen praised the collaboration between GWI and the village council, highlighting the importance of community-driven projects in enhancing residents’ quality of life.
Meanwhile, Jailal highlighted the efficiency of the new system, which has raised the village’s overall water coverage to 95 per cent.
Moreover, Xavier commended the initiative, noting its positive impact on residents’ lives.
Massara Village, home to approximately 543 residents, is divided into three sections, each with its own system.
Section One, which houses key facilities such as schools, health centres, and government offices, is served by a drilled well connected to an elevated trestle and distribution network. Section Two, the most populated area, is similarly equipped with a drilled well and elevated trestle, ensuring a steady water supply.
The previously unserved Section Three, comprising approximately 20 households, was prioritised in the recent project. The remaining households are located in more scattered remote areas.
The new well was drilled through the collaboration of GWI and the Village Council, and the water supply improvement project was completed in October 2024.
