Mazaruni Prison escapee still on the run
Days after Akeem Wong, escaped from the Mazaruni Prison Compound in Region Seven, the Joint Services has ramped up efforts to recapture the convicted rapist.
Speaking to MTV News Update, Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Prison Service, Rajiv Bisnauth, said Joint Services members are making every effort, using water, air, and land patrols to find the escapee.
Wong and another inmate, Gilbert Gill, were labouring in the wood bush in the custody of Prison Officer Torres last Thursday.
While on duty, Wong asked to use the washroom, and Officer Torres granted him permission.
However, about five minutes later, Officer Torres decided to check on Wong, and it was then he discovered him missing. An alarm was raised.
The public has been urged to exercise caution and vigilance and immediately report any sightings or information regarding Wong’s whereabouts to the authorities

Wong was sentenced in 2020 to 15 years imprisonment by Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown High Court after he confessed to raping a 14-year-old girl in 2017.
