Police in Region Nine are probing a shooting incident that occurred at Tabatinga, Central Rupununi, on Monday.
The incident, which took place between 10:00h and 11:00h in a known ‘hotspot’ area, left 23-year-old Dorwnell Thomson, a miner of Tabatinga, hospitalised with gunshot wounds.
According to initial reports, a group of four men, described as “known characters,” were standing in the area when they were approached by two individuals on a motorcycle.
Among the individuals on the motorcycle was an unidentified male and someone matching the description of Thomson, who was also riding a motorcycle.
Shortly after the interaction, multiple gunshots were heard, though it remains unclear which party initiated the shooting.
Thomson later sought medical attention at the Lethem Regional Hospital for gunshot injuries to the right side of his back and right arm. He is hospitalised in a stable condition under police guard.
Detectives processing the scene recovered six 9mm spent shells. One of the suspects, who had been on a motorcycle during the incident, was arrested by police and had his hands swabbed for gunpowder residue. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
In addition to the detained suspect, Thomson and two other individuals present at the scene were also swabbed for gunpowder residue.
