Miner remanded on illegal gun, ammo charges

Charged: Dion Cornelius

A 43-year-old miner was remanded to prison on Tuesday, two days after Police allegedly found an illegal firearm and ammunition at his Princess Street, Werk-En-Rust home.

Dion Cornelius was hauled before Magistrate Rondell Weever in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

It is alleged that on July 17, he had a Smith and Wesson .38 revolver and two live .38 ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence. The matter was adjourned to August 9.

The Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) had reported that a party of Police ranks, acting on information received, went to the miner’s home, where he was seen standing in front of the yard.

Upon seeing the ranks, the CCU said the 43-year-old man attempted to escape but was apprehended.

A search was carried out on his person, and a brown .38 Smith and Wesson revolver along with two live matching rounds of ammunition were found in his left side pants waist.
