Nickerson, Billingy and Sukhai star in National Sports Commission & Guyana Table Tennis Association
The three-day Mashramani Table Tennis Tournament served off on Wednesday with intense competition from youth players.
Zion Nickerson has been named Under-11 Boys champion while Samara Sukhai is the Under-11 Girls champ in the ongoing National Sports Commission & Guyana Table Tennis Association 2022 Mashramani Tournament.
Jasmine Billingy, Samara Sukhai and Akira Watson all placed first to third place respectively in the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-19 Girl’s categories of the event.
For the Under-13 Boys category, first place went to Malachi Moore while Ebo McNeal was second and Darius Shepherd third.
Under-15 Boys saw Colin Wong and Ebo McNeal earning first and second place respectively while Malachi Moore and Darius Shepherd tying for third place.
National Coach Idi Lewis was impressed with the level of skill displayed by the players.
“Just like in the National Championship there was a very high level. It was extremely competitive.”
The competition continues on Saturday, February 26th and concludes on Sunday, February 27th with top senior players expected to participate.
“We missed a few key players yesterday, maybe because of the weather or because it was mash. But this weekend should be really exciting with the ‘B’ class and the Men’s and Women’s singles.”
Coach Lewis said.
Over the past few weekends, the Guyana Table Tennis Association also hosted its Junior and Senior National Championships.
These tournaments will all be used to evaluate the player for selection to a National team that will compete in the Senior Caribbean Championship in Cuba early next month.
“The Nationals played an important role but we’ll also be looking at the Mashramani tournament. We still have a couple days to finalise the Mens’ and Womens’ teams so we’ll be looking to this tournament also”
he noted.
