President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday appointed the new commissioners to serve the new Police and Integrity Service Commission.
However, Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton has threatened to move to the court as he believes that proper consultation was not held on these appointments.
The Opposition leader made this statement during his weekly press conference.
He said “It will be challenged in the court. That is the bottom line because we know what meaningful consultation is. It is not a choice of the government to be involved in meaningful consultation and it is mandated by the constitution and therefore it should be done in keeping with the law.”
It is the Opposition Leader’s view that the Government does not intend to have meaningful consultations while making reference to the joint statement which had initially highlighted that they will meet within a week.
However, that meeting never happened as a result of President Ali's busy schedule.
However, when an invitation was extended to Mr. Norton for a meeting May 30, he was a no show. Norton’s reason for this was that he has a ‘pressing’ schedule. President Irfaan Ali has since labelled the leader’s behaviour as unwilling and immature.
