Keron Layne, a 23-year-old unemployed resident of One Mile Extension, Wismar, is expected to be hauled before the court after he, along with two others, were observed transporting a large quantity of marijuana.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said at about 01:00h on Monday, ranks on patrol observed three unidentified males on two unmarked XR motorcycles heading west on the Wismar Bridge from the eastern direction.

As the police vehicle attempted to stop the motorists, the two motorcycles came to an abrupt halt. The three men dismounted and allegedly threw three large plastic bags over the bridge into the river before attempting to flee.

The officers managed to apprehend one of the suspects, later identified as Layne. The other two suspects escaped.

Police quickly retrieved the plastic bags from the river, which, when opened in the presence of Layne, contained marijuana. The total weight of the seized marijuana was 25.2 kilograms or 55.56 pounds.
