One dead, four homeless following Linden Chinese restaurant fire
A fire of unknown origin destroyed a building that housed a Chinese restaurant at Mackenzie, Linden, on Monday, leaving one person dead and four individuals homeless.
The deceased has been identified as Zang, a Chinese national. In a statement, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said that at about 01:42h, it was alerted of the fire at the intersection of Dageraad Avenue and Greenheart Street, Mackenzie, Linden, and swiftly responded.
According to the GFS, when firefighters arrived on the scene, they encountered a raging fire engulfing the two-storey wooden and concrete building.
Despite their best efforts, the GFS said the property sustained irreparable damage, with the building and its contents completely destroyed.
“Utilising two jets working from Water Bowser #12, firefighters managed to extinguish the fire, preventing further devastation.”
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and working diligently to determine its origin and circumstances.
“Our condolences go out to those affected by this devastating incident, and we commend the bravery and swift action of our firefighters in the face of adversity.”
To this end, the Fire Service has once again urged citizens to prioritise fire safety by ensuring proper electrical maintenance and being prepared for emergencies.
“Ensure homes and businesses are equipped with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and smoke alarms,” the statement concluded.
