OPR launches probe into Robb Street shooting that injured bystander
The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident on Robb Street, Georgetown, early Saturday morning that left a businessman injured.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 01:50h near a popular nightclub, resulted in 27-year-old Cassel Nurse being shot in the foot.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said on Sunday that an anti-crime patrol, led by a Gazetted Officer, was on duty when they received reports of two men behaving suspiciously on motorcycles around the Bourda Market area.
Responding to the information, the ranks confronted the suspects, who fled down Robb Street upon seeing the officers.
One of the fleeing men reportedly drew a firearm and fired several shots at the pursuing ranks. In response, one of the officers discharged several rounds from his service weapon.
During the exchange of gunfire, Nurse, who was standing next to his vehicle parked outside the nightclub, was struck in the right foot. He was immediately taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he is reportedly in stable condition.
