OPR probes police shooting and escape of wanted suspect in Rupununi

The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into a recent shooting incident involving Lethem Police Station officers and two wanted suspects, as well as the subsequent escape of one of the suspects from police custody.

The incident occurred on November 18, 2024, at approximately 12:30h in Pirara Village, Central Rupununi, during an operation to apprehend Cortland Jones, also known as ‘Buck,’ and Rickford King - two Guyanese nationals from Aranaputa Valley, North Rupununi.

Jones and King were wanted by police for over two years in connection with multiple cattle larceny offences. Additionally, Jones was a prime suspect in the October 2022 murder of Aeriey Matthews.

Acting on a tip-off, the suspects were seen riding a motorcycle along the Lethem/Kurupukari trail, and police confronted them in Pirara Village. The men reportedly resisted arrest, attacking officers with two choppers.

During the altercation, the Inspector leading the team suffered a chop wound to his right hand. Police discharged their firearms, injuring both suspects—King in the lower left hip and Jones in the left thigh.

Following the altercation, both suspects were transported to the Lethem Regional Hospital for treatment. After receiving medical care, they were taken into police custody.

While in custody at the Lethem Police Station, Jones was reportedly handcuffed to a wheelchair in the Enquiries Office due to his injuries.

Despite these measures, he managed to escape around 1:05h on November 20, 2024.

Three police ranks are now under close arrest as the OPR investigates the circumstances surrounding Jones’ escape.
