An accident at the intersection of South Road and Oronoque Street, Georgetown, on Friday, resulted in the death of Sooklall Pharous, a 55-year-old resident from South Ruimveldt.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the fatal accident occurred at about 18:25h and involved motor cars PJJ 4643, driven by a 36-year-old man, and HD 5268, driven by a 41-year-old man. Pharous was a passenger in motor car HD 5268.

According to the Police, motor car PJJ 4643 was proceeding east along South Road at a high speed, while the other car was travelling south along the eastern drive lane of Oronoque Street.

At the intersection, the driver of the hire car reportedly failed to stop at the stop sign, driving into the path of motor car PJJ 4643.

The front of motor car PJJ 4643 collided with the right side of the hire car, causing the driver to veer off the road and plunge into a nearby trench. The force of the collision ejected Pharous from the hire car.

Both drivers and Pharous were rescued by public-spirited citizens and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical treatment.

Pharous was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. His body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
