Pedal cyclist, 63, killed in No. 28 Public Road collision
A 63-year-old pedal cyclist was killed in a collision on Saturday afternoon on the Number 28 Public Road, West Coast Berbice (WCB).
Dead is Standford Benjamin of Number 28 Village. The accident, which occurred at about 14:00h, involved a motor car bearing registration PZZ 7256, driven by Malcolm Nurse, a 65-year-old resident of New Amsterdam, Berbice.
According to a preliminary report from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Benjamin was riding his pedal cycle west along the southern side of the road when the car, which was traveling in the same direction behind him, struck his bicycle.
The driver alleged that as he attempted to pass Benjamin, the cyclist suddenly swerved into the path of his vehicle. This sudden movement caused the front of the car to collide with the pedal cycle.
As a result of the collision, Benjamin was thrown from his bicycle onto the roadway. He was quickly picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where he was attended to by medical staff.
Despite efforts to save his life, Benjamin later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. The investigation into the fatal accident continues.
