Pedestrian killed by speeding driver who was taking son to hospital


A 43-year-old pedestrian was killed on Friday evening on Harlem Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), by an alleged speeding driver who was taking his son to the hospital after he ingested a poisonous substance.


Dead is Umesh Ramkishun of Lot 38 First Street Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD). The accident occurred at about 19:15h.

According to the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the driver of motorcar PZZ 9115 was proceeding at a fast rate of speed on the Public Road when he struck down the pedestrian who was crossing from south to north in the company of another pedestrian.


As a result of the collision, Ramkishun fell onto the bonnet and windscreen of the motorcar and received injuries to his head and body, resulting in his right foot severed.


The pedestrian’s lifeless body was picked up by the police and escorted to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.


The driver was arrested, and a breathalyser test showed no trace of alcohol. Notwithstanding, he is in custody, assisting with the investigation.
