Pensioner killed while attempting to cross Le Ressouvenir Public Road
Stephen Correia, an 85-year-old pensioner, was struck down and killed while attempting to cross the Le Ressouvenir Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Friday.
The incident, which occurred around 8:30h, involved motor car PAG 7093, driven by Garfield Hoppie, a 58-year-old carpenter of La Bonne Intention (LBI).
According to police reports, Hoppie was heading west along the southern carriageway of the Le Ressouvenir Public Road at an allegedly high speed when Correia, a resident of Lot 1 Le Ressouvenir, attempted to cross the road from south to north.
Unfortunately, he ended up in the path of the vehicle. The collision caused Correia to fall onto the road, suffering injuries to his left hand, ankle, and other parts of his body.
Public-spirited citizens quickly came to his aid, and he was transported in a semi-conscious state to the Georgetown Public Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Hoppie, the driver, has been arrested and is in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
Correia’s body has been transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled for Monday.
