“Phagwah exhibits one element in the vibrant mix of our rich diversity” – ERC
As Guyanese celebrate Holi, also known as Phagwah, the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has extended warm greetings, particularly to the country’s Hindu brothers and sisters.
In a statement, the ERC highlighted the profound significance of Phagwah, urging all to internalise its message of renewal, joy, and the triumph of good over evil, as illustrated in the story of young Prahlad in Hindu scriptures.
The festival, which also marks the arrival of spring, has become a fixture that exemplifies national celebration among all Guyanese, leading to commendable growth in tolerance and acceptance within our multi-ethnic society.
“While we come together to celebrate in the spirit of unity and harmony, let us also be mindful of our actions and how they affect these religious observances,” the ERC stated, emphasising the need to respect the sanctity of Phagwah and other religious holidays.
The ERC reminded that Phagwah exhibits one element in the vibrant mix of Guyana’s rich diversity. The ERC noted that it represents an achievement stemming from a combination of efforts as we endeavour to be One People, under One Nation, Celebrating One Destiny.
“May this festival inspire us to deepen our bonds of understanding and respect, fostering a society where every individual and their beliefs are valued and accepted,” the statement continued.
As Guyanese exchange sweets, colours, and greetings with their loved ones, the ERC urged everyone to reaffirm their commitment to building a more inclusive and harmonious nation for future generations.
