Police Constable stabbed, attacked by Venezuelan nationals at Stabroek Market
A Police Constable attached to the Brickdam Police Station’s Criminal Investigation Department was stabbed and injured late last night while on patrol at Stabroek Market in Georgetown.
The incident occurred around 23:45h on Cornhill Street and involved four male suspects believed to be Venezuelan nationals.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the officer, dressed in plain clothes, was conducting foot patrols when he encountered a Spanish-speaking woman armed with a broken bottle, arguing with another woman.’
The officer approached the armed woman, identified himself as a police officer, and instructed her to drop the weapon.
While addressing the situation, four men, one armed with a knife, reportedly approached the officer from behind and launched a violent attack, stabbing him multiple times.
The injured officer drew his service weapon, a .38 revolver, and discharged four rounds into the air, prompting the attackers to flee.
An alarm was raised, and an Impact Patrol team transported the officer to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was treated for multiple stab wounds. His condition is listed as stable.
Police arrested the four male suspects, and the two women involved in the altercation. Two of the suspects, who sustained minor injuries, were taken to the hospital for treatment under police guard.
Crime scene technicians processed and photographed the area while investigators canvassed for witnesses and CCTV footage.
Cameras in the vicinity were identified but have not yet been reviewed. Several persons in the area have been questioned as the investigation continues.
