Police hunting for men who abandoned boat with over 100lbs of ganja in Berbice
Ranks from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard Unit in Berbice discovered 10 parcels of marijuana weighing 135 pounds during a patrol on the Berbice River on Tuesday.
The incident occurred as the Coast Guard ranks were conducting routine patrol duties in the river. They observed a boat approaching their position but noticed it abruptly changed course in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
The patrol unit gave chase, and the boat eventually ran aground on the riverbank. Three identifiable occupants abandoned the boat and fled the scene on foot.
The abandoned boat was towed back to the Coast Guard base, where an inspection revealed 10 bulky parcels wrapped in black garbage bags and clear transparent plastic marked with a blue ‘B20.’
Following the discovery, the Coast Guard ranks returned to the river location in search of the fleeing suspects, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.
They promptly notified the police about the seizure of the narcotics. The drugs were transported to the Central Police Station, where they were marked, logged, and weighed, confirming the total weight as 135 pounds.
