PPP’s 32nd Congress: Pres. Ali heads list of new 35-member Central Committee
President Dr. Irfaan Ali received the most votes in the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) internal elections for its new 35-member Central Committee.
The elections were held following the opening ceremony of the party’s 32nd Congress at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre on Saturday. Dr. Ali received 2,309 votes, over Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who mustered 2,257 votes.
Apart from Dr. Ali and Jagdeo, the other top 10 members are: Zulfikar Mustapha (2,174 votes), Vickram Bharrat (2,046 votes), Gail Teixeira (2,015 votes), Nigel Dharamlall (1,912 votes), Collin Croal (1,792 votes), Kwame Mc Coy (1,721 votes), Anil Nandlall (1,690 votes), and Pauline Sukhai (1,688 votes).
In addition to the 35 voting members of the Central Committee, five were elected as non-voting members. These persons are Deodat Indar, Mae Thomas, Jason Abdulla, Andrew Forsythe, and Rion Peters.

The 35-member Central Committee will meet shortly and, among other things, elect a 15-member Executive Committee.
“When we meet, most likely later this week, the 40 members will get together, but only 35 can vote, and they will then elect an Executive Committee of the party,” Dr. Jagdeo explained.
The Central Committee will also elect the party's general secretary and other officers when they meet later this week.
To this end, Dr. Jagdeo noted that the Congress, which was held under the theme, “Strengthen the Party, Defend Guyana, Unite All Our People for Progress and Prosperity,” was a “resounding success.”
It saw over 3,000 delegates and was dubbed the largest-ever congress held by the party.
