Pres Ali activates emergency response team to support Hurricane Beryl relief efforts
In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced that Guyana has activated a full emergency response team to aid affected countries in the region.
“I am closely coordinating with all affected countries in our region,” the Guyanese Head of State, who serves as the Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), said in a Facebook post.
He added, “We have activated a full emergency response team from Guyana to support all efforts. Currently, we are mobilising for our first support mission, prioritising Grenada for tomorrow morning.”
The US National Hurricane Centre says extremely dangerous Beryl, which is still a Category 4 Hurricane, has entered the southeastern Caribbean. However, life-threatening winds and dangerous storm surge conditions continue over the southern Windward Islands.
In his post, President Ali highlighted the critical nature of the coming days in determining the Hurricane’s path and the extent of its impact.
“Hurricane Beryl is still very active in the region, and the coming days will be crucial in determining its path and the continued devastating impact it could have,” he said.
To this end, the Guyanese Leader called on the regional private sector and other agencies to join the relief efforts.
“The regional private sector and other agencies must be fully mobilised to provide support at this time,” he urged. “Our prayers and thoughts are with the people of the region.”
