Prison officers must play a meaningful role in helping to reform prisoners and preparing them for their positive reintegration into society.

This is according to Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot, who reminded prison officers stationed at Mazaruni prison of their important role in maintaining law and order.

He said they were called to balance security and control with humanity and justice in the execution of their duties.

The Prison Director was delivering the charge to officers on Friday evening when he visited the Mazaruni Prison as part of his prison management strategy.

Elliot has adopted a “managing by walking around” strategy, which allows him to actively engage with staff at all levels and also allows for direct interaction and feedback regarding issues affecting their performance.

Further, Elliot urged officers to adopt methods to execute their duties with more expertise, accountability, and a change mindset. The officers were also briefed on the importance of following the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the prison. [Press release from the Guyana Prison Service]
