The Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department has commenced an investigation into a non-fatal workplace accident that occurred at the construction site of the Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

The accident occurred on Saturday at approximately 18:57h. The injured employee was identified as Collis Hall, an operator employed with Saipem Guyana Inc. working at the shore base.

The Ministry of Labour said it received information that Hall was using a 400-tonne Manitax Walk Crawler Crane during a test loading exercise when it suddenly toppled, causing him to be seriously injured.

He was subsequently transported to the Woodlands Hospital, where he remains a patient.

“This investigation is being conducted by Assistant Chief Occupational Safety & Health Officer, Ms. Maxean Bess,” the Ministry noted.

Three months ago, an employee working at the shore base facility died after he reportedly drowned.
