Sales Assistant remanded over murder of ‘Roach’
Anand Zaimoon, a 33-year-old sales assistant, has been remanded to prison over the murder of a vagrant.
Appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Zaimoon of Lot 16 Plantain Walk, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD), was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The charge against the sales assistant alleged that on June 15, at Water Street, Georgetown, he murdered Munilad Persaud, called ‘Roach.’ The case was adjourned to July 23 for disclosure.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had said that Zaimoon told investigators that his 35-year-old brother, a drug addict with no fixed place of abode, frequently dwells around the Stabroek Market area in Georgetown.
The accused claimed he often visited the Stabroek Market to search for his brother and occasionally saw him in Persaud’s company. On the day of the incident, Police said that at about 17:00h, Zaimoon went to the Stabroek Market area in search of his brother but could not locate him.
While on Water Street behind the Guyana Fire Station, he approached Persaud and paid him $2,500 to help search for his brother. About 30 minutes later, Persaud returned, stating he could not find the accused’s brother. This led to a heated argument between the two men.
During the altercation, it is alleged that the sales assistant picked up a piece of wood from the ground and struck Persaud once in the chest.
Persaud staggered a few steps before collapsing and turned motionless. Following the incident, Police said that the accused caught a speedboat from the Georgetown Ferry Stelling and travelled to Vreed-en-Hoop, where he was arrested.
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) were summoned to the scene, and the vagrant was pronounced dead.
