Serviceman dies after being run over by 14-tonne ready-mix cement truck
Patrick Pickett, a serviceman employed by Top Mix Cement, located at Lot 725 Block, Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was killed after being run over by a 14-tonne ready-mix cement truck on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 10:45h while Pickett was servicing the truck, checking the differential oil underneath the vehicle.
Sham Singh, the truck’s operator, reportedly drove the vehicle to the batching plant, unaware that Pickett was still beneath it, resulting in the fatal accident.
Pickett was discovered injured by Batch Supervisor Harry Mahase and other staff members, who rushed him to Diamond Regional Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry of Labour said its Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department has launched an investigation into the tragic incident.
OSH Officer Neza King visited the site to gather initial information, but primary witnesses were unavailable as they were at the police station providing statements.
While the investigation continues, Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton expressed his condolences to the grieving family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased and emphasised the importance of safety in the workplace, urging both employers and workers to prioritise safe practices.
