‘She didn’t even get to see her baby’ – Mother of teen who died of dengue

Lanita Jacobs

Nineteen-year-old Lanita Jacobs, who died of dengue complication, did not get a chance to meet her bundle of joy, according to her mother, Venetta Daniels.

Jacobs of Hampton Court, Region Two, died on Saturday last, about one week after contracting dengue. Her baby was also tested positive for the disease.

A grieving Daniels relayed that her daughter complained of feeling unwell on June 21. The following day, she took her daughter to a pharmacy, where she was given medication for pain and fever.

The 19-year-old’s health began to deteriorate, and she was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital on June 26. Despite her pleas, Daniels claimed that the medical staff did not prioritise her daughter’s care.

“While going to the hospital, the last thing she kept saying to me was, ‘Mommy, I can’t take it anymore. My belly [is] hurting me badly,” a distraught Daniels recounted.

She added, “They rushed her in to do a C-section, and I didn’t even get to see her before. She didn’t even get to see her baby, she really wanted to see her baby because it was her first child.”

Following the surgery at the Suddie Hospital, Jacobs was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday, June 27. Despite the efforts to save her, she passed away on Saturday, adding to the growing number of dengue-related deaths in the country.

The grieving mother expressed her anguish over losing her daughter at such a young age.

“I don't feel good because my daughter is dead. She was only 19,” Daniels said. Now, she faces the responsibility of caring for her newborn grandchild.
