Shooting at Sophia leaves labourer, 56, dead

Police have launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of Courtney Younge, a 56-year-old labourer of Lot 643 ‘D’ Field Sophia, which occurred on Thursday night.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that Younge was assisting a contractor identified as Vincent Cozier, 57, on a house in Sophia.

Cozier told crime sleuths that he and Younge were imbibing on the site when he observed the suspect approaching on a pedal cycle.

He said the suspect stopped in front of the site, and he saw him running with what appeared to be a shotgun. He entered the yard, pointed the gun at Younge, and discharged a round in his direction, Cozier added.

The 56-year-old labourer fell to the ground, after which the suspect exited the yard and made good his escape.

Younge’s body is at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination (PME).  Police are hunting for the suspect as the probe continues.
