SOCU arrests lawyer for advising client to exercise his rights; later released
Attorney-at-Law Tamieka Clarke was arrested on Friday by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) for advising her client to remain silent, which is a part of his rights.
She was later released following the intervention by Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes. Speaking outside SOCU’s Headquarters, Hughes said he was contacted after being aware that Clarke was arrested.
“Ms. Clarke has a client who is being investigated by SOCU. She was asked to bring the client in. She came in and advise the client that he should not provide SOCU with any sort of answer or statement, remain silent, which is a protected rights under the Constitution,” Hughes revealed.
Hughes noted that the lawyer’s arrest was an assault on every lawyer in Guyana. He is expected to host a press conference shortly.
