Soldier remanded over attempted murder of fiancée

L-R: Philon Edwards and Leticia Reynolds

Days after he allegedly chopped and stabbed his fiancé, 26-year-old Philon Edwards was hauled before the Blairmont Magistrate Court, where he was slapped with an attempted murder charge.

The 26-year-old Corporal in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was arraigned before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir, who read him the charge.

The charge stated that on November 22, 2024, at No. 30 Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB), he attempted to murder 23-year-old Leticia Reynolds.

An unrepresented Edwards was remanded to prison until December 12, 2024, and the case was transferred to the Fort Wellington Magistrate Court.

MTV News Update had reported that Reynolds was stabbed and chopped multiple times on her body, allegedly at the hands of Edwards.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had reported that the incident was triggered after Edwards learned that Reynolds’ former partner, the father of her five-year-old son, had visited their home earlier in the day.

Edwards reportedly confronted Reynolds upon his return around 17:50h on the day in question, accusing her of allowing the visit in his absence. While Reynolds confirmed the visit, she clarified that she had not interacted with her former partner.

This response reportedly enraged Edwards, who grabbed a kitchen knife and threatened Reynolds while instructing her son to leave the house. The young boy complied, leaving his mother alone with his stepfather.

Police stated that Edwards then stabbed Reynolds multiple times, targeting her face, fingers, and abdomen.

Desperate to escape, the 23-year-old woman attempted to flee, but Edwards escalated the violence by retrieving a cutlass from the kitchen.

He allegedly struck her on the neck, inflicting a severe wound that caused significant blood loss.

Following the attack, Edwards fled the scene but later walked into the Weldaad Police Station, where he reportedly confessed to wounding Reynolds. He was immediately arrested and charged.

The injured woman managed to seek help from a relative, who transported her to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Her condition is now listed as stable.
