Stabbing of Canje Businessman: Manslaughter charge against labourer upgraded to murder
The manslaughter charge initiated against Dave Singh, the labourer, who allegedly killed 53-year-old Vickram Seubarran, has been upgraded to murder.
On Wednesday, Singh was informed of the new charge when he appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
Singh, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that between July 31, 2022, and August 1, 2022, at No. 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice, he murdered Seubarran, called ‘Vick.’
According to Police Prosecutor Shenell Matheson, the new charge followed a recommendation by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The labourer, who was initially released on $750,000 bail on the manslaughter charge, was remanded to prison until September 13 on the murder charge. The murder accused is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Mercaline Bacchus.
On August 1, Seubarran was found motionless in a pool of blood with a knife stuck in his back at his No. 2 Village, East Canje Berbice’s home.
The discovery was made at about 6:00h by the deceased’s cousin, who was tasked with cleaning his home. Mere hours after the killing, Singh was arrested, and he reportedly told investigators that he and Seubarran shared a sexual relationship.
He said he visited the man’s home, where they consumed alcohol and engaged in sexual intercourse. He stated he was about to leave but was prevented by Seubarran. This led to an argument, and it was then that he stabbed the victim and left.
