Station Street murder/suicide: Victim was stabbed 14 times – Police
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Sunday identified the woman in the Station Street murder/suicide as 25-year-old Yuni Zamora Castro, a Venezuelan national.
The suspect, who committed suicide following the brutal attack, was identified as El Tio (only name given).
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), El Tio is also a Venezuelan national, and the duo resided at a two-storey concrete house on the southern side of Station Street, Kitty, Georgetown.
The couple were reputed husband and wife, living alongside other Venezuelan nationals. The incident occurred at about 17:30h on Saturday.
According to Anislaidy Diaz Leblanch, a 42-year-old cleaner and cook, she was a close friend of Yuni.
The two worked together at a food shop at Stabroek Market. Anislaidy reported that about four days prior to the incident, Yuni had told El Tio that she no longer wanted to be in a relationship with him due to his ‘jealousy.’
On the day of the incident, Anislaidy and Yuni arrived home from work at around 17:00h and were sitting on the verandah when El Tio approached them. He handed Yuni $1,000 to repay the $200 he owed her.
Yuni informed him that she didn’t have the change at the moment but would give it to him later.
El Tio then went downstairs and sat in the lower flat. Yuni followed later, speaking on her phone when El Tio suddenly approached her with a knife and began stabbing her multiple times. Anislaidy, terrified, fled the house, escaping unharmed.
The police were called to the scene, where they found Yuni lying face-up on the ground, having sustained 14 stab wounds. El Tio, who was found dead, had also inflicted nine stab wounds to his chest.
Both Yuni and El Tio were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies have been sent to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home pending a post-mortem examination (PME).
