Guyanese, during extreme rainy weather have been known to take to social media to share videos and pictures of lightning during the heavy downpour.

Head of the Hydromet Department, Dr. Gavin Cummings assured this is normal and there is nothing to worry about but cautioned persons to get shelter as soon as possible.
Thunder, high winds, darkening skies, rainfall and brilliant flashes of light are warning signs for lightning strikes.
“The first thing is to ensure you stay indoors, don’t go outside […] if you have a thunderstorm activity there are going to be lightning strike and you should stay indoor to protect yourself.”
“Get under a shelter as soon as possible, stay out of the open” he told persons who may be outdoors at the time lightning strikes.
He is advising persons to get home as soon as possible and potentially avoid getting struck by lightning.
