STEM Guyana seeks funding for new facility to expand programmes

STEM Guyana is urging the private sector to come forward and support them as they seek a larger facility and more funding to facilitate the expansion of their various programmes.

STEM Guyana has long been hoping for their own facility to host various classes and initiatives.

Dominic Budhan, a trainer and admin assistant at STEM Guyana, notes that the current space they have at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall is often inadequate for the type of programmes they try to run off or cannot accommodate the amount of children who want to participate.

“We were actually granted land by GO-Invest, but we’re looking to get the project ongoing. So we’re open to any sponsorship or anything like that to really get that project going. You know, a new location, we’d be able to do more things – do more training, have a lot more persons coming and being involved, and I feel we can do a lot more in a bigger space.”

STEM Guyana currently has 38 learning pods across Guyana and prior to the pandemic approximately 70 STEM Clubs.

The learning pod is an after-school educational delivery model aimed at improving the performance outcomes of vulnerable children. Execution of the programme is managed by a mobile and web app created by STEM Guyana’s team of interns.

The non-government organisation is now working towards expanding their current programmes and reviving old initiatives that were halted by the onset of COVID-19.

Programme Analyst Alisha Koulen notes that STEM Guyana having their own facility would be crucial in pursuing the organisation’s motto; "Unleashing the world class potential of Guyanese youth".

“It’s quite expensive and costly to do so and we want to give that access not just to people who can afford it but we want to give access to everybody. We firmly believe that with equal access to opportunity and equal access to resources, we can find a lot of hidden talent in Guyana. “
