Street brawl at Parika leaves one dead, another injured
Police in Region Three are investigating the alleged murder committed on 18-year-old Donald Gibson of Lot 7 Hyde Park, Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), by a 24-year-old male suspect, who is in custody.
According to the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the incident occurred at about 17:30h at Parika Facade, EBE, on Monday.
The CCU reported that Gibson and the suspect were at a liquor shop at Parika Facade when an argument erupted about the suspect hitting his friend sometime in the past.
During the argument, the CCU said Gibson allegedly assaulted the suspect physically before leaving the bar.
“As the suspect subsequently left the bar, he was accosted by the accused, and an argument ensued again ensued, which led to a scuffle,” the CCU said.
The suspect, who was armed with a knife, dealt Gibson a stab under his left arm, causing his friend, 19-year-old Wazim Mohamed, to attempt to part the fight, resulting in a brawl between the three.
The suspect stabbed Mohamed with the knife to his back and buttocks before public-spirited persons quelled the fight. The suspect went to a nearby trench, where he allegedly threw the knife.
The Police were summoned, and the 18-year-old was escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he died while receiving medical attention. Mohamed was later treated and is presently a patient at the facility.
The suspect was arrested and placed into custody—an investigation is in progress.
